Console Not Showing on TV? HDMI & No-Signal Fixes for PS5 and Xbox

PS5 or Xbox powering on but the TV says 'No Signal'? Work through the cable, port and settings checks first — then learn the signs the HDMI port itself needs repair.

Short answer: Most "no signal" faults are the cable, the TV input or a resolution mismatch — check those first, in order. But if the cable wiggles loosely in the console's HDMI port, the port looks bent or pushed in, or the console works on no TV with any cable, the HDMI port itself is likely damaged. That is a board-level soldering repair — very fixable, and something we assess free at Royal Tech in Rathfarnham, Dublin.

Work through these first (they fix more consoles than we do)

1. The cable — swap it, really

HDMI cables fail silently and often. Try a known-good cable, ideally the one working with another device right now. Cheap long cables are the usual suspects, and a cable that works for a TV box may not carry a console's 4K signal properly.

2. The right input, and a different TV port

Confirm the TV is on the input the console is actually plugged into (it sounds obvious; it catches everyone once). Then move the console to a different HDMI port on the TV — TV ports fail too.

3. Power cycle properly

Fully shut the console down (not rest mode), unplug it and the TV for two minutes, reconnect the HDMI firmly at both ends, then power on. This clears the HDMI "handshake" confusion behind many no-signal reports.

4. Boot to safe mode / low resolution

If the console previously fed a different TV or monitor, it may be outputting a resolution this TV rejects. On PS5, hold the power button until the second beep to reach Safe Mode and change the resolution to a basic setting. On Xbox, power on holding the eject and bind/pair buttons to boot in low-resolution mode. A picture in safe mode means settings, not hardware.

5. Look at the port — honestly

With the cable out and a phone torch, look into the console's HDMI port. The plastic tongue in the middle should be centred and intact; the pins should be even. A tongue that is cracked, pins that are bent, or a port that has visibly sunk into the casing tells the real story.

Signs the HDMI port itself is damaged

  • The cable feels loose or falls out under its own weight.
  • Picture appears only when the cable is held at an angle or pressed.
  • "No signal" on every TV, with every cable, after safe-mode checks.
  • The console was knocked, fell, or the cable was yanked while connected.
  • White light on PS5 that never settles, alongside no picture (can indicate HDMI circuitry faults).

Port damage is extremely common — the port is soldered to the board and takes every knock the cable takes. The repair means removing the damaged port and soldering a new one at board level. It is skilled work, but routine for a repair bench, and far cheaper than replacing the console. Do not keep wiggling the cable to "find" the picture — each wiggle can tear the pads the new port needs.

What about controllers and other console faults?

Stick drift, disc drives that will not read, overheating shutdowns and power faults are the other regulars on our bench. Our console repair page covers PS5, PS4, Xbox and Nintendo — pick the fault and WhatsApp us, or walk in any day for a free assessment.

When it is not the port: the other no-signal culprits

HDCP and TV settings

Consoles encrypt their output (HDCP), and older TVs, capture devices or HDMI switches in the chain can break the handshake. If the picture works plugged directly into the TV but not through a soundbar, switch or capture card, the middle device is your suspect. Some TVs also need the port set to an "enhanced" mode for 4K consoles — check the TV's HDMI settings for the port you are using.

The console's storage and system software

A console that powers on, shows nothing and also will not reach safe mode may have a deeper fault — corrupted system software or a board-level problem beyond the port. The tell is behaviour: fans racing then shutting down, beeping patterns, or a white light that cycles endlessly without ever attempting a picture. These are still assessable faults, but they are diagnosed on the bench, not by cable-swapping.

Heat damage masquerading as a picture fault

A console that shows a picture, then loses it after ten minutes of play, is often overheating rather than losing signal — the output dies when the console protects itself. Dust-packed vents, a dried-out thermal interface and a cabinet with no airflow are the usual causes, and a service clean plus fresh thermal compound is the fix.

Keeping the new port alive

HDMI ports die from force, not age. Route the cable so nothing pulls sideways on it, never move furniture with cables connected, support long cable runs, and when swapping the console between rooms, unplug at the console end gently and straight. If children or pets share the space, a short flexible HDMI extension left permanently in the port takes the daily wear instead of the soldered socket — the cheapest insurance in gaming.

Frequently asked questions

My PS5 shows a picture in safe mode but not normally. Is the port broken?

Probably not — that pattern points to resolution or HDCP settings. Set a fixed, modest resolution in safe mode and test again. If the normal picture then drops in and out, the port goes back under suspicion.

Can a damaged HDMI port be repaired, or is the console finished?

Repaired, in the great majority of cases. The port is a replaceable component; what matters is the condition of the board beneath it, which the free assessment establishes.

The console overheats and shuts down. Related?

Usually separate — dust-blocked fans and dried thermal compound are the classic causes, and both are serviceable. If it is happening, mention it during the same visit.

Do I need to book?

No. Walk in seven days a week at 13 Main Street, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14, or message us on WhatsApp first and describe the symptoms — it helps us help you faster.

Can I use the console with a damaged port using another output?

Modern consoles have no second video output — the HDMI port is the only route to the TV, which is exactly why its repair matters. Remote-play streaming to a phone or laptop can bridge you over for some games while you arrange the repair.

My Xbox shows 'No Signal' but the PS5 works on the same TV and cable. What then?

The TV and cable are cleared, so suspicion moves fully to the Xbox — try its low-resolution boot, then inspect its port closely. If both fail, it is a bench assessment; bring it in and we will find out for free.
